NEW DELHI
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has mounted a major humanitarian relief effort in the flood and landslide-affected regions of Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, and Himachal Pradesh, rescuing more than 500 people and delivering critical supplies.
According to the Western Air Command, IAF helicopters have so far evacuated 541 individuals from the Bharmor–Chamba sector while simultaneously airlifting over 10 tonnes of essential relief material to Kullu in Himachal Pradesh and Kishtwar in Jammu & Kashmir. Despite gradual improvement in flood conditions, several remote areas remain cut off, necessitating urgent air support.
The operations, carried out round the clock, Involved four helicopters and a team of 35 crew members, who braved adverse weather and challenging terrain. “IAF assets are positioned for follow-up tasks, reflecting the force’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief,” the Western Air Command stated in a social media post.
The airlifted materials included food grains, medicines, tents, and other emergency supplies, which were distributed to marooned villagers and displaced families. Evacuees, many of them stranded in inaccessible pockets due to landslides and washed-out roads, were moved to safer zones.
Officials emphasized that relief and rescue efforts will continue until all affected residents are secured and adequate supplies are delivered. The operation underscores the IAF’s critical role in responding to natural calamities across the country, providing rapid support in collaboration with state authorities and disaster management teams.
