Delhi Police capture fugitive rapist-murderer

New Delhi
Delhi Police’s Crime Branch on Friday apprehended Sanjay alias Sujoy, a convicted rapist and murderer of a six-year-old girl, who had been on the run for over four years after jumping parole. The 40-year-old was arrested in Patna, Bihar, following a three-month investigation.

Sanjay was convicted in 2010 for the 2007 rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in Kapashera, Delhi. The victim, lured by Sanjay with a samosa, was taken to a vacant plot where he committed the heinous crimes. He was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Dwarka Additional Sessions Court, a conviction upheld by the Delhi High Court in 2014. Granted parole on June 15, 2021, he failed to return and went into hiding.

A special unit of the Crime Branch, the Anti-Robbery and Specialised Crimes (ARSC) team, led by Inspectors Mangesh Tyagi and Robin Tyagi, tracked Sanjay using technical surveillance and human intelligence. He had changed his identity to Sujoy and moved across Bihar to evade capture. During his time on the run, he faced a new case in Patna for assaulting women and had married twice, with one child and another child on the way.

DCP Sanjeev Kumar Yadav said Sanjay had no steady income and relied on ancestral land for livelihood. The operation, involving more than ten police personnel, highlights the perseverance and tactical efficiency of the Delhi Police. Authorities emphasised that the arrest reflects law enforcement’s commitment to bringing even long-time fugitives of serious crimes to justice.

Sanjay has now been handed over to Delhi authorities to serve the remainder of his life sentence and face pending charges.
