In a poignant departure from commercial pomp and high-decibel revelry, residents and youth groups of Bastiban in Lakshmeshwar have earned widespread acclaim across Gadag district by celebrating an austere ‘Raitha Ganesha’ (Farmer Ganesha) festival in solidarity with drought-hit cultivators.
With monsoon failure leaving agricultural lands parched and rural households in acute distress, the Gajanan Youth Group and village elders discarded expensive sound systems, dazzling electronic displays, and firecrackers. Instead, the community dedicated the festivities to raising awareness about agrarian hardship. Commencing in the presence of Sri Abhinava Basavannajja of Kundagol Kalyanpur Math, the ceremonial immersion procession featured traditional bullock carts, folk tableaux honoring Kittur Rani Chennamma, and youth dressed in traditional agrarian attire, with onlookers gently showering flower petals along the route.
Local farmers expressed deep gratitude for the gesture. Senior cultivator Takappa Satapute noted that celebrating festivals with ostentation felt inappropriate while rural families were facing acute crop failure, commending the youth for acknowledging the agrarian community’s grief. Farmer leader Basavaraj Odunavara emphasized that channeling celebration expenses into constructive community causes provides a meaningful model for festival organizers statewide.
Marked by daily spiritual observances rather than extravagance, the festival committee adopted the motto, “Let us wipe away even a single drop of the farmer’s tears.” On Sunday night, members of the Basaveshwara Bhajana Sangha of Basapura Oni joined the Ganesha Mandali to perform night-long devotional bhajans, offering collective prayers for rainfall to revive withered fields.
Agrarian leaders, including Manjunath Magadi, Taluk President of the Federation of Comprehensive Farmers’ Organizations, alongside Ashok Niralota and Mahadevappa Annigeri, participated in the event. Utilizing the gathering to voice urgent agrarian demands, farmer representatives collectively urged the state government to officially notify Lakshmeshwar taluk as drought-hit, expedite immediate relief packages, and release overdue crop insurance claim disbursements to affected farm families without administrative delay.
