India, OPEC deepen dialogue on energy stability

NEW DELHI

India and the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) held their seventh High-Level Energy Dialogue on Tuesday, focusing on oil market stability, energy security and the need for timely investment across the petroleum industry.

The meeting was co-chaired by Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais. The two sides reviewed short-, medium- and long-term energy outlooks, with discussions centred on India’s expanding role in global economic growth and rising energy demand.

Puri described India’s relationship with OPEC as complementary and mutually beneficial, while stressing the importance of continued cooperation between producers and consumers. He said sustained dialogue was needed to support investment, strengthen energy resilience and ensure reliable energy supplies for global growth and development.

The minister also appreciated OPEC’s efforts to promote stability and transparency amid geopolitical uncertainty and market volatility. Al Ghais said engagement with India was a priority for OPEC because of the country’s growing importance in the global energy landscape. He noted that the OPEC-India Energy Dialogue, launched in New Delhi in 2015, had now completed 11 years. The discussions covered adequate investment across the petroleum sector as global energy demand expands. Both sides highlighted institutional engagement as a platform for exchanging views on market developments, supply needs and longer-term energy security. Both sides acknowledged progress in technical areas and agreed on the need to deepen institutional cooperation. They also agreed to hold the eighth High-Level Meeting of the OPEC-India Energy Dialogue in Vienna, Austria, on a mutually convenient date. The discussions underlined the importance of maintaining cooperation between major energy producers and consumers to address changing global energy requirements and strengthen market stability.
