Expressing deep concern over the commercialization of the fourth pillar of democracy, Karnataka Media Academy member K. Lingajja stated on Tuesday that journalism must retain its public-interest purpose and act as a vital bridge between the legislature, the executive, and the citizens.
Inaugurating the Press Day celebrations and felicitation ceremony organized by the Kanakagiri Taluk unit of the Karnataka Working Journalists’ Association at the Government Pre-University College, Lingajja paid floral tributes to the portrait of D.V. Gundappa (D.V.G.). He emphasized that journalists hold a noble duty to highlight grassroots civic concerns for government action while ensuring that state welfare benefits reach deserving beneficiaries.
Addressing the gathering, district reporter Sharanabasava Hulihaidara called upon media professionals to report objectively and fearlessly without bias toward caste, creed, or religion, reminding them that maintaining credibility is central to the profession. College Principal Amaresh Devarala noted that, like soldiers defending borders and farmers cultivating food, journalists bear an immense social responsibility to work with integrity without succumbing to external pressures.
Presiding over the session, Taluk Association President Somashekharayya Swami urged the state government to honor its pending assurances, including the provision of concessional bus pass facilities for accredited working journalists. During the event, the association felicitated several district-level award recipients in the presence of faculty members, student representatives, and media fraternity members.
