The Harangi and Mathigodu elephant camps in Kodagu district have reopened to tourists after remaining closed for five months following a tragic elephant-related incident at Dubare.
The camps, located in Kushalnagar taluk, were shut as a safety measure after a woman tourist was trampled to death during a sudden clash between elephants at the Dubare elephant camp. The incident had raised concerns over the safety of visitors at elephant camps in the district.
With the reopening, the Forest Department has introduced strict safety guidelines for tourists. Visitors must maintain a minimum distance of 10 metres from the elephants while watching or interacting with them from designated areas.
The department has also prohibited tourists from touching the elephants or taking selfies with the animals. Officials said the restrictions are aimed at preventing risky behaviour and ensuring that visitors maintain a safe distance from the animals.
The reopening gives tourists an opportunity to watch elephants at the two camps again after a long gap. However, the Forest Department has urged visitors to strictly follow all safety instructions and cooperate with staff during their visit.
Strict rules of the new guideline
- Mandatory 10-metre distance: Tourists must maintain at least 10 metres from the elephants.
- No touching: Touching, bathing, or pouring water on elephants is strictly prohibited.
- No selfies: Tourists must not approach elephants closely for selfies or photographs.
