Karthik Subbaraj’s Tamil film Dorothy received a warm response at its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film, shown in the Centrepiece section, earned a standing ovation from the audience. The event marked an important moment, as Dorothy became the first Tamil film to premiere at the festival in ten years.
Actors Keerthy Suresh, Sananth and Rishikanth attended the premiere along with producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain. Videos from the screening showed the cast and crew taking the stage after the end credits, where the audience welcomed them with loud applause and a standing ovation. Dorothy features an original score by veteran composer Ilaiyaraaja, marking his 1540th film. The movie is backed by Jio Studios and Sikhya Entertainment. Subbaraj said the story explores friendship, love, identity, caste, masculinity and compassion through deeply human characters. Although the film is rooted in Tamil Nadu’s culture and landscape, he believes its emotions can connect with audiences everywhere.
The filmmaker also said he had carried Dorothy with him for a long time and was proud to begin its journey at a global festival. The film will now move toward its worldwide theatrical release on September 25. After receiving such an encouraging response in Toronto, Dorothy enters its next chapter with growing attention and expectations from viewers.
