The 380-acre Belavadi Lake in Chikkamagaluru district has reached full capacity and started overflowing, bringing relief to residents and farmers in the surrounding areas. MLC C.T. Ravi performed the traditional ‘Bagina’ ceremony at the water body to express gratitude for the availability of water.
The lake reportedly filled and began overflowing following the flow of water associated with the Yettinahole project. The development has triggered a political debate, with Ravi criticising MLA Thammaiah over claims regarding the project and the arrival of water in the region.
Ravi said around Rs 17,000 crore had been spent on the Yettinahole project, of which the previous BJP government had released Rs 10,700 crore. He took an indirect dig at Thammaiah, saying those who were unaware of the project’s origin and the source of the water were now attempting to take credit by claiming that they had brought the water.
Ravi also referred to Thammaiah’s political association with the BJP from the beginning of the project in 2012 until 2023 and questioned the demand for proof of development works. He said he had participated in several important programmes, including the inauguration of the medical college, the Bagina ceremony at Belavadi Lake, the foundation-laying ceremony for the Deputy Commissioner’s office and the Karagada project.
He said people who had eyes, ears and a conscience did not need separate proof of development. Ravi added that those without a conscience would not be satisfied even if evidence was provided. He said he had worked effectively for the constituency when he got an opportunity and urged those currently in power to undertake development works that would earn public appreciation.
Ravi maintained that political differences should not prevent development and said the people would ultimately judge the contribution of leaders. The overflowing Belavadi Lake has meanwhile emerged as a significant development for the region, particularly amid concerns over water availability. The Bagina ceremony was held as a traditional expression of gratitude for the lake reaching full capacity.
