Environmental efforts received a major boost this weekend as civic leaders, students, and local volunteers joined forces for a massive cleanup drive. The Bengaluru South City Corporation Commissioner, Shri K.N. Ramesh, inaugurated a special plogging initiative at the Madiwala Lake premises to promote ecological conservation and keep local water bodies free from harmful pollutants. The event was organized in active partnership with the environmental group ‘The Indian Ploggers Army’ and enthusiastic student volunteers from Christ University.
The cleanup campaign delivered impressive results within a very short span of time. A dedicated team of 43 participants scoured a hundred-meter radius around the lake, picking up discarded trash while jogging. In just 75 minutes, the group successfully collected one hundred twenty kilograms of single-use plastic waste, including plastic bottles, milk packets, discarded wrappers, and straws. All gathered items were systematically sorted on-site before being handed over to municipal dry waste collection vehicles for proper scientific disposal.
The Corporation Commissioner and local enforcement marshals rolled up their sleeves to participate directly in the drive, setting an inspiring example for citizens. Speaking to the participants, renowned eco-activist ‘Plog Raja’ emphasized that true environmental protection goes beyond merely picking up litter; it requires stopping waste generation at the source. He urged residents to reject single-use plastics entirely, carry reusable water bottles, and adopt mindful consumption habits to protect natural resources.
The event concluded with a powerful collective pledge administered to all attendees. Commissioner Ramesh and the student volunteers swore to treat personal and community waste with strict responsibility, committing to a cleaner and greener city rather than seeking social media praise. Officials stressed that continuous collaboration between educational institutions, local residents, and civic administration remains essential for preserving Bengaluru’s lakes and maintaining a sustainable, plastic-free urban environment for future generations.
