Dr Dharani Mohan, CEO of MVJ Medical College and Research Hospital, stressed the need for collective efforts to prevent suicides, particularly among young people.

She was speaking at an awareness programme organised by MVJ College of Nursing in front of the Taluk Office at Hoskote Bus Stand on Thursday, marking World Suicide Prevention Day.

Dr Mohan said suicide was not merely an individual tragedy but also reflected pressures and difficulties within society. Academic competition, career expectations, unemployment, bullying, domestic violence, poverty and social isolation could contribute to emotional distress.

She said temporary setbacks could sometimes appear as permanent failures to young people already struggling emotionally. Families, educational institutions, workplaces, healthcare professionals and governments must work together to create supportive environments.

â€śThe first step is to create an environment where people can speak about emotional difficulties without fear or shame,” Dr Mohan said.

MVJ College of Nursing Principal Precilla Nirmal said everyone could become a helping hand for people struggling with emotional difficulties. She stressed the importance of conversations and seeking help when needed.

“We need a culture in which asking for help is seen as an act of courage. We need families that listen, institutions that support and communities that notice when someone is struggling,” she said.

Vice-Principal Mahalakshmi, Psychiatry Department head Dr Bhargavi, Professor Anasuya and teaching faculty were present.

Students also took out a jatha from KEB Circle and performed a street play to spread awareness about suicide prevention.
