Kalaburagi South MLA Allamprabhu Patil has urged the State government to declare Kalaburagi district as drought-hit, citing a rainfall deficit, worsening agricultural conditions and the impact of adverse weather conditions.
Patil said the drought situation and problems faced by farmers had already been brought to the government’s attention. However, he expressed concern over Kalaburagi being excluded from the first list of drought-hit districts recently announced by the government. He said the decision should be reconsidered based on the actual situation prevailing in the district.
The MLA said he would raise the issue with Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara and Kalaburagi district in-charge Minister Priyank Kharge. He said the government should ensure that Kalaburagi receives appropriate assistance if the district meets the required drought criteria.
“The Chief Minister has already visited Kalaburagi and held a meeting to assess the situation. The first list was prepared according to the drought assessment criteria of the Central government. It should be examined why Kalaburagi was excluded despite facing a severe rainfall deficit,” Patil said.
He said weather forecasts suggesting the possibility of worsening drought conditions should be taken seriously. Officials have already been directed to take precautionary measures and prepare for the situation, he added. Patil recalled that he had personally raised the drought issue during the Chief Minister’s visit and highlighted the difficulties being faced by farmers.
