KOLKATA
Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Friday accused the BJP government in West Bengal of using the police to create fear and restrict her party’s public meetings. Addressing a rally of the TMC students’ wing in Kolkata, she said she would challenge such restrictions and continue reaching out to people across the state.
Banerjee alleged that the police had a more humane approach during her government but had now been turned into a “monstrous entity” under the BJP. She accused the ruling party of practising divisive politics and using the police against TMC supporters. She said stopping public meetings would not prevent her from meeting people.
The former chief minister said she would soon begin a tour of West Bengal. If authorities refused permission for public meetings, she said she would walk through the streets and meet people directly. Banerjee also said she did not want to repeatedly approach the courts whenever local administrations denied permission for rallies.
Instead, she said her party would seek people’s support to hold meetings at the venues it chooses. Taking a sharper tone against the BJP, Banerjee said she would see how many eggs and bricks were available, referring to alleged attacks on TMC leaders in different parts of the state.
