The United States has announced $500,000 in emergency assistance for Nepal following devastating flash floods in Rasuwa district that killed several people and caused widespread destruction. Washington is also deploying a disaster response adviser to support relief operations and Nepal’s government-led response.
The US State Department said the assistance would help communities affected by the floods with immediate humanitarian needs. The funding will be provided through the department’s global award with Catholic Relief Services. It will support emergency shelter, distribution of relief supplies, clean water, sanitation and hygiene services.
The US Embassy in Kathmandu is coordinating with local authorities to locate and assist American citizens in the affected areas. Americans have been advised to monitor local news and follow instructions issued by Nepalese authorities.
Meanwhile, the United Nations has also mobilised support for Nepal as authorities assess the scale of the disaster. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed condolences to families of those who lost their lives and solidarity with communities affected by the floods.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said UN teams and humanitarian partners were mobilising personnel and supplies to assist the Nepal government. He praised emergency responders working to save lives and said the UN was ready to provide further assistance.
The response is focused on shelter, basic supplies, safe water, sanitation and hygiene. Nepal remains highly vulnerable to floods and landslides during the annual monsoon season.
