Abhishek Banerjee questioned over poll violence case

KOLKATA

Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee appeared before the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department. The Lok Sabha member is being questioned at the CID headquarters in Kolkata over an FIR involving alleged inflammatory remarks made against Union Home Minister Amit Shah before the recent assembly elections.

Banerjee arrived at the Bhabani Bhavan office slightly ahead of his noon deadline. He signed the visitors’ book before heading inside to face the interrogation team. Senior investigators had already spent over two hours questioning the high-profile politician about his campaign speeches.

This marks the third day in a row that the prominent leader has faced intense questioning from different law enforcement bodies. Recently CID investigators grilled Banerjee for over eight hours regarding a state assembly forgery case. Following that, Enforcement Directorate officers questioned him for more than eleven hours on Monday regarding a multi-crore school job scam.

The current case focuses on allegations that Banerjee incited political violence and issued threats during the high-stakes election campaign. The cybercrime branch initially handled the police complaint after the FIR was filed last month. However, state authorities officially transferred the entire investigation to the specialized CID unit on June 11. Officers are checking if his words directly caused public disruptions, while party workers watch the ongoing legal drama closely.
