High speed train crushes stalled Jakarta commuter

JAKARTA

At least seven people are confirmed dead and dozens injured after a high-speed flagship train slammed into a stalled commuter service on the outskirts of Jakarta. Emergency teams worked desperately to liberate survivors pinned beneath twisted metal, with officials warning that the death toll will likely rise as rescuers reach more “mangled carriages.”

The disaster began with a bizarre chain reaction at a level crossing. According to rail operator KAI, a taxi clipped a Jakarta-Cikarang commuter train, causing the local service to stall on the tracks. Shortly after, the Argo Bromo Anggrek, a premier high-speed express traveling between the capital and Surabaya, plowed into the stationary cars. The impact was so severe that search and rescue head Mohammad Syafii described the scene as having “limited space” for even the most basic evacuation maneuvers.

Witnesses watched as responders used angle grinders to cut through steel frames to reach those trapped inside. The National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) noted that the process is moving “slowly” to avoid further injury to those still alive within the debris.

This tragedy once again puts Indonesia’s rail safety record under intense scrutiny. The network has a history of fatal collisions, including a 2010 crash that killed 36 and a 2015 minibus collision that claimed 18 lives. As families wait for news near the wreckage, the government faces renewed pressure to modernize unprotected crossings and implement emergency stopping systems for its high-speed fleet.
