Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for stronger international sanctions on Russia after a major drone and missile attack struck Kyiv and several other regions Friday night. The assault caused fires, injuries, and damage to homes, vehicles, and businesses.

In a Saturday post on social media, Zelenskyy described the night as “difficult for all of Ukraine.” He reported that 250 drones—mainly Iranian-made Shaheds—and 14 ballistic missiles had been launched, targeting civilians. Cities including Odesa, Vinnytsia, Sumy, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Dnipro, and Kyiv were hit. Fatalities occurred, though the exact number was not confirmed.

“Emergency services are clearing debris and responding where needed,” Zelenskyy wrote. “Sadly, there are injuries and destruction across the country.”

Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine has repeatedly offered ceasefire options, including a proposed airspace ceasefire, but claimed Russia has ignored all such efforts. He called on the United States, Europe, and allied nations to impose additional sanctions targeting Russia’s economy.

“The war continues because of Moscow’s actions,” he said. “Only pressure through stronger sanctions will force Russia to consider real diplomacy.”

Earlier in the week, Zelenskyy discussed potential ceasefire proposals with U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders. However, he expressed doubt over Russia’s sincerity. “We want peace, but we don’t trust Russia,” he said. “A ceasefire must be the first step.”

Zelenskyy concluded by thanking all international supporters, urging further unity in pressuring Moscow to stop the war.
