Officials from the United States and Taiwan met in Washington on January 8 to explore ways to enhance Taiwan’s involvement in international organizations, including the United Nations system.

The meeting, organized by the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO), included representatives from the US Department of State and Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Discussions focused on Taiwan’s inclusion in the World Health Assembly (WHA), the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and other multilateral forums.

A US Department of State statement released Saturday highlighted the exchange of views on global challenges, including public health, aviation safety, environmental protection, and transnational crime. The US delegation emphasized Taiwan's expertise and contributions in these areas and reiterated support for its participation in the World Health Organization and ICAO.

Both sides acknowledged the need for partnerships to counter efforts aimed at isolating Taiwan from the global stage. The statement affirmed US policy under the Taiwan Relations Act, the three Joint Communiques, and the Six Assurances, which guide its "one China" policy.

The dialogue reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen Taiwan's international presence amid growing geopolitical tensions.
