US Pushes for Ceasefire to End Israel-Hamas Conflict
Washington DC
The United States has reiterated its call for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, emphasizing it as the solution to ending the ongoing conflict. Matthew Miller, the Spokesperson for the US Department of State, made this statement during a Daily Press Briefing.
Miller addressed several critical issues, including the hostage negotiations in Gaza, rising civilian casualties, and the increasing need for humanitarian aid in Gaza and surrounding regions like Syria. Regarding the hostage talks, he expressed cautious optimism, noting recent progress but acknowledging the ongoing challenges. He added that only a few differences remain between the parties, and he believes they can be resolved.
On the safety of journalists in Gaza, where 196 casualties have been reported, Miller stressed the importance of protecting media personnel. He commended journalists for their bravery and emphasized that a ceasefire is essential to ending the risks they face.
He also condemned the ongoing suffering of civilians in Gaza, including deaths, injuries, and lack of basic necessities, and reiterated that a ceasefire is crucial to stop this tragedy. On the topic of Gaza's future governance, Miller declined to comment on reports of an agreement between Egypt and Hamas, instead emphasizing the need for new governance following the conflict.
