Three dead in Sweden shooting, teen suspect caught
Stockholm
Three young people were killed in a shooting near Vaksala Square in Uppsala, Sweden, on late Tuesday. Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy suspected of carrying out the attack.
The victims were between 15 and 20 years old. Authorities are still notifying their families. A large police operation followed the shooting, with officers searching door-to-door for more information and witnesses.
The suspect reportedly fled the scene on an electric scooter. Several nearby residents said they heard loud bangs, which were later confirmed to be gunfire. Some others were injured, likely from gunshots.
Police spokesperson Magnus Klarin earlier said, “We received several reports of bangs in the area. That is what we can say at this time.” He made the statement before the deaths were confirmed.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. Police are still investigating what led to the attack.
This tragedy comes as Sweden continues to face growing gang-related violence. Earlier this year, the European Parliament highlighted concerns over the country’s rising crime levels. Sweden, despite having high gun ownership under EU standards, strictly controls licensing and eligibility for firearms.
In February, Sweden experienced its worst mass shooting when a gunman opened fire at an adult education center in Örebro, killing 10 people and injuring six. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called it the “worst mass shooting in Swedish history.”
The latest Uppsala incident has raised fresh concerns about youth violence and gun crime. Officials are expected to address the nation once more facts are known.
