Sri Lanka released 14 Indian fishermen on Sunday during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s official visit to the country. This move was seen as a friendly gesture and part of growing cooperation between India and Sri Lanka.

The release came after PM Modi held talks with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. During the meeting, they discussed the long-running issue of fishermen being arrested for crossing into Sri Lankan waters. Modi said both sides should handle this issue in a “kind and understanding” way. He also asked for the release of the fishermen and their boats.

Most of the arrested fishermen are from Tamil Nadu. So far in 2025, Sri Lanka has caught 119 Indian fishermen and seized 16 boats. The Indian government has been working to get them back home.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed the release. He said more fishermen might be freed soon. He added that both sides agreed to look at the issue in a helpful and respectful manner.

PM Modi’s visit also included the launch of India-supported railway projects, like the upgraded Maho-Omanthai railway line and a new signalling system. These projects aim to improve transport in Sri Lanka.

In a special ceremony, President Dissanayake gave Modi the “Sri Lanka Mitra Vibhushan,” one of the highest civilian awards in the country. It was given to thank Modi for his strong support for Sri Lanka and to mark the growing friendship between the two countries.

At a dinner hosted in Modi’s honor, the Sri Lankan President welcomed more Indian visitors and hoped for even better ties between the two countries in the future.
