South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has stressed that protecting South Korean citizens in the Middle East is the government's highest priority after Israel's recent military strikes on Iran. At an emergency economic and security meeting held on Friday, Lee instructed officials to assess the condition of Koreans in the region, check for any harm, and act swiftly to prevent further risk. He highlighted that the safety and lives of South Koreans must come first.

President Lee also expressed concern over the economic fallout of the conflict. With oil prices fluctuating and financial markets reacting sharply, he warned that South Korea’s economy, which had been showing signs of recovery, now faces renewed instability. He urged government departments to closely monitor developments and take necessary steps to reduce the impact of external shocks.

Reassuring the public, Lee asked citizens to remain calm, stating that the government is prepared to take all required measures to protect national security and economic interests.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the strikes were a preemptive military operation aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities, which Israel considers a major threat to its existence. Defense Minister Israel Katz backed the operation and declared a state of emergency to ensure readiness and civilian safety.

Iranian state media reported explosions in Tehran early Friday but did not confirm the targets. Speculation suggests Israel may have hit military or nuclear-related facilities. Iran’s security body has warned it would retaliate by targeting Israeli nuclear sites if attacked, amid growing regional tensions.
