Slovak President Peter Pellegrini has praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative and hinted at launching a similar campaign in Slovakia. The program, which encourages people to plant a tree in their mother’s name, was described as a “gamechanger” by Pellegrini.

The appreciation came during a symbolic event in Sihot, Nitra, where he planted a Linden tree—Slovakia’s national tree—alongside Indian President Droupadi Murmu. Nitra’s mayor Marek Hattas also attended the event in the historic town that manufactures Tata Motors’ Jaguar Land Rover vehicles.

President Murmu explained the significance of the initiative, which was launched by PM Modi on World Environment Day last year. She said the campaign promotes a deep emotional connection between people and nature, through the symbolic act of honoring one’s mother.

President Pellegrini was impressed by both the meaning and reach of the initiative. He acknowledged the campaign’s ability to link environmental action with personal and cultural values, and hinted that Slovakia might roll out a similar movement to boost climate awareness and community participation.

The initiative has drawn international recognition for turning tree planting into a people-powered environmental revolution. It not only emphasizes climate preservation but also pays tribute to mothers for their nurturing role in society.

President Murmu concluded her visit to Slovakia on Friday afternoon—the first by an Indian President in nearly 30 years—after holding several high-level meetings and cultural engagements aimed at strengthening Indo-Slovak relations.
