At least six people were killed and over 100 taken hostage when armed militants attacked a passenger train in Pakistan’s Balochistan province on Tuesday, forcing it to derail.

The attack took place on the Jaffar Express as it was passing through Ab-e-Ghum in Mach Town, Kachhi district. Reports indicate that around six armed men opened fire on the train, causing chaos among passengers.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility, stating that it derailed the train in Mashkaf, Dhadar, Bolan, and took over 100 passengers hostage, including security personnel. The militant group also claimed that six military personnel were killed in the operation, though security forces have not confirmed this.

A rescue operation is underway, with security forces surrounding the Mach mountains, a region known for its rough terrain. Explosives may have been used to damage railway tracks before the attack, and the train’s driver is reportedly among the seriously injured. Sporadic gunfire continues as authorities work to free the hostages.

Emergency protocols have been activated, with hospitals on high alert and ambulances dispatched from Sibi. Additional convoys have been deployed to assist security forces in the operation.

This is one of the most significant attacks by BLA in recent times, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in the region. Authorities continue their efforts to neutralize the attackers and secure the hostages.
