Shooting halts Strawberry Festival, two injured
Louisiana
A shooting at the Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival in Louisiana left two people injured and forced an early closure of the event on Saturday night.
According to the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office, one victim was hospitalized with an abdominal wound, while another person sustained a minor graze injury. The incident occurred during what had been a lively evening of the annual festival.
In response, the festival was shut down early, and a strong law enforcement presence was maintained in and around the area. Over a dozen agencies assisted in securing the grounds.
The Sheriff's Office vowed accountability, stating, “We pray for the recovery of those injured and promise to bring the responsible individuals to justice.” Authorities also encouraged attendees to continue their plans for Sunday, asking for respect and patience, especially for families and children.
Festival organizers confirmed that the event will resume Sunday with changes to ensure public safety. Activities will start with a church service at 9 a.m., followed by ride openings at 10 a.m., and an earlier closing time of 5 p.m.
“We thank law enforcement for their quick action and guests for their cooperation,” said organizers, adding that local nonprofits would still be offering food.
The shooting remains under investigation, with law enforcement committed to taking strict action against those involved.
