Rajnath Singh may attend Russia’s Victory Day
Moscow
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to visit Moscow in May to attend Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, marking the 80th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War. According to Russian news agency Tass, Indian government sources have hinted at the possibility of Singh’s participation in the Red Square event.
Russia had earlier invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the May 9 parade. While confirmation on Modi's presence is pending, Russia has expressed its hope that he will join the historic event.
A ceremonial Indian armed forces unit may also join the parade, showcasing growing military ties between the two nations. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov mentioned that many global leaders, not just from CIS nations, have been invited to the celebration.
In 2020, President Vladimir Putin invited PM Modi to the 75th anniversary of Victory Day, though it was impacted by the global pandemic.
Recently, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov emphasized that India-Russia relations are strong and growing, grounded in mutual respect and shared global perspectives. Lavrov highlighted preparations underway for Putin’s visit to India in early 2025, which continues the tradition of yearly summits between the two leaders.
Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov confirmed that Putin accepted Modi’s invitation, adding, “It is our turn this year.” The last India visit by President Putin was in December 2021.
Last year, PM Modi visited Russia twice—once for the bilateral summit and again for the BRICS Summit in Kazan—further strengthening India-Russia ties.
