Lisbon
President Droupadi Murmu began her State visit to Portugal with a warm welcome from President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa at the historic ‘Praca do Imperio’ in Lisbon on Monday. She was honoured with a Guard of Honour during the ceremonial reception.
Rashtrapati Bhavan posted on X, “President Droupadi Murmu was received by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal at the historic 'Praca do Imperio' in Lisbon. She was accorded a ceremonial welcome with the Guard of Honour.”
Murmu arrived in Lisbon on Sunday and was welcomed at the airport by India’s Ambassador to Portugal, Puneet Roy Kundal. He wrote, “Honored to receive Rashtrapati Ji in Lisbon on her first State visit to Portugal.”
This marks the first visit by an Indian President to Portugal in 27 years. Murmu’s trip is also part of her two-nation State visit to Portugal and the Slovak Republic.
These visits are expected to boost India’s ties with both nations. Secretary P. Kumaran Lal said the visit also celebrates 50 years of diplomatic relations between India and Portugal.
