Pope Leo XIV begins papacy with global cheers

St. Peter’s Square was full of energy and excitement on Sunday as Pope Leo XIV officially began his time as the new leader of the Catholic Church. Thousands of people from around the world gathered to see him wave from the famous popemobile during his first appearance.
Pope Leo XIV is the first pope born in the United States. He was born in Chicago and also has Peruvian citizenship. He is 69 years old and was elected on May 8 after a quick voting process by Church leaders.
Before leading his first Mass, the new pope took a quiet moment to pray at the tomb of St. Peter. Then, he came out to begin the official religious ceremony to start his papacy.
People cheered and held flags from the U.S., Peru, and the Vatican. Security officers helped guide the large crowd, while Church leaders prepared for the Mass.
Many world leaders attended the event. U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio were there. Peru’s President Dina Boluarte also came, along with leaders from Ukraine and Russia, showing that the Vatican still plays a key role in world peace.
More than 30 Christian groups sent leaders to the event. They joined together in support of the new pope and his vision.
