Kim Jong-un inspects upgraded North Korean tanks
Seoul
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has visited a tank factory to review the progress of its newly upgraded indigenous tanks, state media reported on Sunday. He expressed satisfaction with the improvements and stressed the urgent need to modernise the country’s military equipment.
According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim inspected production status, research developments, and the factory’s work on tank technology. Although the report did not name the factory or its location, it called it an "important" site for military advancement.
Kim said it is vital to replace outdated armoured vehicles with new tanks and modern armoured systems. He emphasized that tanks must be designed with a clear understanding of their role in modern warfare. Without this, he warned, it is impossible to build an effective armoured force.
He also highlighted the need to rapidly expand the production of advanced tanks and self-propelled guns, calling it a key goal for the ruling party. Kim described these upgrades as part of a “second revolution” in North Korea’s armoured military capabilities.
KCNA said Kim was pleased with the new tank design and its improved firepower system, praising its scientific reliability and high-thrust engine. He said the tank industry is now on a more promising path.
This development comes as North Korea recently confirmed sending troops to support Russia in the Ukraine war. Experts believe the regime is focusing more on strengthening conventional weapons, as modern conflicts show these weapons play a crucial role beyond nuclear threats.
