Iran strongly criticized the United States on Thursday, accusing it of using economic sanctions to force its will on independent nations like Iran and India. Iran’s embassy in India posted on X, calling the sanctions a form of “economic imperialism” that harms national sovereignty and breaks international law.

The post came just a day after US President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on India and penalties for purchasing Russian oil, effective August 1.

The Iranian Embassy stated that resisting such tactics supports a stronger Global South and a non-Western multilateral world order.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry also condemned new US sanctions targeting its oil trade. Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqaei called the move “malicious,” saying it hurt Iran’s economy and citizens.

He claimed the sanctions against Iranian oil-related individuals and companies showed “clear hostility” toward the Iranian people. Baqaei said Washington’s repeated use of unilateral sanctions violated human rights and global law.

He warned that the US is ignoring international norms by choosing coercive strategies to push its goals, placing the world at risk. Baqaei said such actions are not only illegal but also amount to crimes against humanity.

Iran has long faced heavy sanctions from the US, especially over its nuclear and regional policies. However, this latest criticism signals growing frustration, especially as India now becomes part of Washington’s latest trade penalties.

Iran’s statements also reflect a broader effort to rally developing nations to stand against Western-led systems and assert more independence in international trade and diplomacy.
