India and the European Union (EU) have reiterated their shared commitment to democracy, freedom, rule of law, and the promotion of human rights during the 11th India–EU Human Rights Dialogue held in New Delhi.

Co-chaired by Piyush Srivastava, Joint Secretary in India’s Ministry of External Affairs, and Herve Delphin, EU Ambassador to India, the dialogue covered key issues including civil and political rights, social equality, freedom of expression, and gender and LGBTQI+ rights. Discussions also addressed the rights of children, migrants, religious freedoms, and the intersection of technology with human rights.

Both sides reflected on progress and challenges since their last dialogue in 2022, recognizing the need to uphold human rights globally. India and the EU praised the participation of voters in their 2024 general elections as examples of vibrant democratic engagement.

The EU reaffirmed its opposition to capital punishment, while India reiterated the importance of recognizing the Right to Development as a fundamental human right. Both emphasized the universality and interdependence of all human rights.

A joint statement highlighted the importance of strengthening civil society, supporting journalists, and safeguarding freedoms of association and peaceful assembly. The dialogue also focused on enhancing cooperation in multilateral forums, particularly at the UN General Assembly and Human Rights Council.

Both parties committed to closer collaboration between their missions in Geneva to pursue joint actions on human rights, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief. The meeting reaffirmed mutual dedication to advancing human rights on both national and international platforms.
