On Monday Dec 9, Uyghur activists and organisations gathered in Munich, Germany, to commemorate 'Uyghur Genocide Recognition Day' and remember the victims of the ongoing genocide in East Turkistan. The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) called attention to the continued atrocities faced by the Uyghur people and stressed the importance of international recognition of these crimes.

A key part of this commemoration was the reflection on the findings of the Uyghur Tribunal, an independent body formed in June 2020 to investigate human rights violations by China. The tribunal’s landmark conclusion in 2021 confirmed that China’s actions against Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and other Turkic Muslims amounted to genocide and crimes against humanity. On social media, WUC President Dolkun Isa marked the third anniversary of the tribunal’s findings, reiterating the call for global recognition and action.

The Uyghur Human Rights Project (UHRP), based in Washington, DC, also marked the day, highlighting that many countries, including the US, UK, Canada, and members of the European Union, have officially recognized the genocide. The European Parliament has declared the persecution as crimes against humanity, while the UN has described the situation as a potential crime against humanity.

The event underscored the global push for justice and accountability in the face of these ongoing human rights violations.
