Cricket fraternity mourns spinner Dilip Doshi
New Delhi
Indian cricket is mourning the loss of former left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi, who passed away at the age of 77 following a cardiac arrest in London. Tributes poured in from across the cricketing community, remembering him as a legendary player and a gentleman.
Doshi, who made his Test debut in 1979 following Bishan Singh Bedi’s retirement, went on to play 33 Tests for India until 1983, claiming 114 wickets, including six five-wicket hauls. Known for his consistency and control, he took 100 wickets in just 28 Tests—making him one of India’s most reliable spinners during his era.
Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar shared his heartfelt memories, recalling his first interaction with Doshi during a UK tour in 1990. “He was warm-hearted and loved chatting about the game. I will miss those cricketing conversations,” Tendulkar posted on X.
Former head coach Ravi Shastri called Doshi “a fine bowler and a gentleman to the core.” Other tributes came from Anil Kumble, Sunil Joshi, Parthiv Patel, and Manoj Tiwary, all expressing deep sorrow at the loss of a man they described as both a mentor and friend. Former spinners Pragyan Ojha and Harbhajan Singh also honored Doshi’s legacy, calling him a distinguished figure in Indian cricket who served the game with grace and grit . Doshi’s son, former cricketer Nayan Doshi, was remembered in many condolence messages. May his soul rest in peace.
