Category 2 Tropical Cyclone Jasper Threatens Northern Queensland With Flash Flooding And Destructive Winds
Canberra
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued warnings for the north tropical coast of Australia's Queensland as Tropical Cyclone Jasper, classified as a category 2 system, is anticipated to make landfall on Wednesday. The Far North Queensland coast faces the risk of life-threatening flash flooding and destructive wind gusts. The Bureau's advisory highlighted the likelihood of locally intensive rainfall leading to dangerous flash flooding along the coast and ranges between Cape Flattery and Port Douglas. Areas near the center of Tropical Cyclone Jasper are also at risk. Destructive wind gusts, reaching up to 140 km/h, may develop between Wujal Wujal and Innisfail, including Cairns, from early Wednesday morning. While currently a category 2 system, Tropical Cyclone Jasper may undergo slight intensification as it approaches the coast. The forecast indicates that the cyclone is expected to cross the coast as a category 2 system on Wednesday and will weaken as it moves inland on Thursday toward the Gulf of Carpentaria. Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions in the face of potential hazards.
