Canada PM Carney defends Modi’s G7 invite
Ottawa
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has defended his decision to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the upcoming G7 summit, emphasizing India’s vital role in global supply chains and its position as the world’s fifth-largest economy.
Speaking to the media, Carney said, “India is effectively the most populous country in the world and central to several critical supply chains. It makes sense to include India in G7 discussions.” His remarks followed criticism from political opponents, particularly the New Democratic Party (NDP), which expressed concern over Modi’s invitation due to the ongoing investigation into the 2023 killing of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.
Carney clarified that it would be inappropriate for him to comment on the Nijjar case as legal proceedings are still underway. However, he noted progress in bilateral ties, stating, “India and Canada have agreed to continue law enforcement dialogue. This recognizes the importance of accountability.”
Prime Minister Modi accepted the invitation during a recent phone call. The G7 summit, hosted by Canada, will be held in Alberta from June 15 to 17. Discussions are expected to cover energy security, digital innovation, critical minerals, and global infrastructure development.
India-Canada relations hit a low in 2023 under former PM Justin Trudeau, following accusations of Indian involvement in Nijjar’s death. Diplomatic expulsions followed on both sides. However, Carney’s election has raised hopes for a reset. Both nations are now considering appointing new High Commissioners, signalling a cautious thaw in relations based on mutual trust and cooperation.
