Cambodia's Ministry of Environment has initiated a nationwide campaign, 'National Roads Without Plastic Waste,' to eliminate garbage and plastic waste along the country's roadways, said a ministry's press release on Thursday.

The campaign, launched on Wednesday, aims to enhance the cleanliness and aesthetic appeal of national roads, making cities and towns more livable and eco-friendly. Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth emphasized that the initiative would improve air quality, create a more orderly environment, and attract tourists and investors. "This campaign will contribute to a cleaner, more hygienic Cambodia, fostering better living conditions for residents," he said.

The minister encouraged citizens, local authorities, and both public and private stakeholders to actively participate in road-cleaning activities and strengthen waste management efforts. He also advocated for continued support of the "Today I Will Not Use Plastic Bags" initiative to further reduce plastic consumption.

Since its launch in September 2023, the plastic-free campaign has seen over 9.7 million participants, including students, engage in reducing plastic waste. In 2024, the initiative led to an 80% reduction in plastic imports and a significant decrease in street litter across 11 provinces compared to the previous year.

These efforts represent Cambodia's broader strategy to combat plastic pollution and promote sustainable waste management, ensuring a cleaner and greener future.
