Work on Amrit Bharat Station Project Delayed in Ballari

Timely completion of government projects is essential to avoid public inconvenience

BALLARI – The Central Government’s flagship initiative, the Amrit Bharat Station project—launched to modernize 508 railway stations across the country—is progressing at a sluggish pace in Ballari. Despite initial momentum, the project is now facing delays due to several technical and administrative obstacles.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the station’s redevelopment via video conference in August 2023. The Bellary station was to be upgraded at an estimated cost of ₹216.66 crore under the scheme.

So far, partial progress has been made: the paint from the station’s stone heritage structure has been removed to restore its natural look, and key areas like the rest room, waiting room, SS office, ticketing counters, and staff control rooms have been renovated. Roofing work on platforms 1, 2, and 3 has also been completed. According to a recent update shared by the Divisional Railway Office on social media platform 'X', about 64% of the overall work is done.

However, a major hurdle has stalled further progress. The construction of a proposed 40-foot-wide flyover—an important component of the upgrade—has been halted due to the presence of high-tension electric wires at the site.

Initially, concerns were raised that the allocated ₹216.66 crore was insufficient. But recent clarifications reveal that the amount is part of a larger pooled fund of ₹254 crore for several stations, including Ballari.

Authorities have been urged to expedite work to minimize disruption to the public.

Ballari is a key revenue source for the Railway Department, and ₹50 crore should be allocated for its station development, said Railway Action Committee Chairman Maheshwaraswamy. He also emphasized the need for access from the west side of the station and the construction of an additional platform there.
