In a shocking incident in Chamundi Hill's JC Layout locality, a woman was arrested for allegedly murdering her friend over a loan repayment dispute. The victim, Sulochana (65), was killed by her friend Shakuntala (40) in a moment of rage.
Both women were residents of the same locality and had developed a friendship. Shakuntala had borrowed ₹2.5 lakhs from Sulochana, and along with the money, had taken gold ornaments that Sulochana had kept in a jewelry shop. Despite the passage of several months, Shakuntala did not return the money. On March 5, Sulochana visited Shakuntala's home to demand the repayment, leading to a heated argument. In a fit of anger, Shakuntala allegedly strangled Sulochana to death.
After the incident, Shakuntala removed the gold jewelry from Sulochana's body and pledged the gold after paying off the remaining ₹35,000 owed to the shopkeeper. She then called Sulochana’s son, Ravi Chandra, informing him that his mother had collapsed at home.
Upon his arrival, Ravi Chandra took Sulochana to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead. The news of her death brought Sulochana’s daughter, Kavitha, and other family members to the scene, who began making arrangements for the last rites.
When Kavitha noted that the gold jewelry was missing, she grew suspicious and reported her mother’s death to the Nazarbad police station.
Upon investigation, police developed suspicions about Shakuntala and subjected her to questioning. During the interrogation, she confessed to the murder, admitting that she had killed Sulochana over the money issue. She also disclosed that she had pawned the jewelry to clear her debts and had hidden other valuables in a private finance company.
Ravi Chandra filed a complaint with the Jayalaxmipuram police station, leading to further legal action against Shakuntala.
