Water level in rivers rises due to continuous rain, enters low-lying areas
MANGALURU
Heavy rains have been continuously falling across Belathangady taluk for the past two days, causing the water level in the rivers of the taluk to rise significantly. The water level has increased in all the rivers including Netravati, Mrityunjaya, Somavati, Kapila, Palguni.
Flood fears were rife in Mundaje and Kalmanja villages as the work of clearing the banks of the Kindi dams on the Netravati and Mrityunjaya rivers flowing in Mundaje and Kalmanja villages was not completed. The Netravati and Mrityunjaya rivers overflowed due to heavy rain. The banks of the Kindi dams in Anangalli, Pajiradka, Kaup etc. here have not been cleared.
The Pajiradka Kindi Dam is located at the confluence of the Netravati and Mrityunjaya rivers. Due to a blockage in the dam, the water flow was obstructed, causing flooding within a 5 km radius of the two rivers. Along with this, the waste wood accumulated in the Kindi dams caused the water level to rise further.
The river water entered the gardens of the villages of Kayarthodi, Kudenchi, Anangalli, Kadamballi, etc., causing a flood threat.
Even after the 2019 floods, there has been a normal flood in these rivers, but there is an atmosphere of fear among the people. This is the first time that water has flowed in the river in this way before the start of the monsoon season. Last year, at this time, two rivers had completely dried up and there was a struggle for water, and the rivers had flowed after the third week of June. However, this time, the river has flooded in the month of May itself, said VG Patavardhan, a senior farmer of Mundaje Kadamballi.
