Waste Treatment Plant to Be Privatized

HUBBALLI

Faced with mounting challenges in managing waste across the rapidly growing twin cities of Hubballi-Dharwad, the municipal corporation has decided to privatize garbage disposal operations. In a major policy shift, the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) will now entrust private agencies with the responsibility of processing daily garbage on the same day it is collected.

Currently, around 300 tonnes of waste is generated in Hubballi and 150 tonnes in Dharwad each day. Despite ongoing efforts like bio-mining to reduce old garbage piles at locations such as Hosa Yellapur and Karwar Road, massive heaps of waste continue to accumulate. These legacy waste dumps have been growing for decades and are only partially being processed through bio-mining methods.

The corporation emphasized that new waste must not be allowed to pile up. The aim is to process each day’s waste before the next day’s garbage arrives at the dumping yards. This marks the first time the civic body is implementing such a plan through private participation.

Officials say the daily disposal model is a necessary step, as old waste is still being addressed through bio-mining while 450 tonnes of fresh waste are being added daily. Without immediate scientific processing, the city risks falling back into a cycle of unmanaged garbage buildup.

The corporation’s decision is expected to significantly improve waste management and environmental health in the twin cities, provided private partners can deliver efficient and timely processing.
