HASSAN:

Shravanabelagola, revered as the southern Jain Kashi, is set to gain global recognition as it moves closer to being included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, Law, Parliamentary Affairs, and Tourism Minister H.K. Patil announced. He was speaking at the Chaturmasa and Kalasha installation programme in Shravanabelagola.

"Shravanabelagola is an ocean of devotion, rich with inscriptions, sculptures, and ancient spiritual heritage. Our government is committed to securing World Heritage status for this sacred site, and preparations are already underway," said Patil. He added that the State Archaeological Department, led by Commissioner Devaraju, has submitted all necessary information and documentation for the proposal.

Highlighting the spiritual and historical significance of the site, Patil recalled how Jain sage Bhadrabahu Muni spread the teachings of Jainism from this region, influencing kings, emperors, and millions of followers across India.

The Minister also emphasized the need to preserve the ancient artworks in the Kushmandini Temple, assuring government support regardless of cost. “The preservation of these timeless paintings is a shared responsibility, and the government will extend all required financial support,” he assured.

Abhinava Charukirthi Bhattarak Swamiji, head of the Shravanabelagola monastery, praised Minister Patil’s efforts and said his commitment to heritage preservation has already resulted in ₹50 crore being allocated for tourism development across ten districts. He also urged the inclusion of Brahmajinalaya of Neminath in the World Heritage list, highlighting the crucial role of political will in the preservation of religious and cultural landmarks.

Shravanabelagola’s likely inclusion is expected to further boost heritage tourism and preserve its legacy for future generations.
