Undertrials attacked in M’luru district jail
MANGALURU
An incident of violence and damage to government property took place in the Mangaluru District Jail on Tuesday. Following the rioting by prisoners on Monday night, it was reported that it happened again on Tuesday afternoon.
Prison Superintendent B Suresh received information from staff that some prisoners from ‘A’ barrack had attacked the remand prisoners who were working in the prison's kitchen.
When the superintendent visited the scene and inquired, it was confirmed that the interrogated prisoners of ‘A’ Barrack had physically assaulted other prisoners who were working in the kitchen. Upon learning of this incident, the prisoners of ‘B’ barrack expressed extreme anger and shouted in loud voices.
In addition, they tried to break the iron door of ‘B’ barrack. They damaged 10 CCTV cameras. They ripped off their wires, and destroyed a mobile jammer antenna. It is estimated that the damage to property due to this incident is around Rs one lakh.
The undertrial prisoners who were attacked suffered minor injuries and were treated at the Government Wenlock Hospital. Prison Superintendent B. Suresh discussed the incident with his superiors and filed a complaint at the Mangalore City Police Station.
Criminal Case No. 51/2025 has been filed under Sections 118(1), 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) 2023 and Section 2.00: 2(B) of the Karnataka State Prisons Act (KPDLP ACT) in connection with this incident.
City Police Commissioner Anupam Agarwal said that the police have already begun investigation.
