Traffic congestion in Belagavi claims 105 lives a year
Belagavi
Belagavi, one of the fastest-growing cities in the state, is facing increasing traffic congestion. There is one-way traffic system on 10 major roads within the jurisdiction of North and South Traffic police stations in the city. However, the traffic rules are not being followed. It is a matter of concern that, on an average, 105 people lose their lives in road accidents caused by traffic violations every year.
The number of vehicles is increasing daily, affecting smooth traffic flow To ease traffic movement, the police department has made one-way traffic arrangements on Pimpalkatta of Raviwar Peth, Nehru Nagar Second and Third Cross, Ganapati Galli, Kirloskar Road, Ramadev Galli, Tilakwadi D Mart Marg, and Anasurkar Galli. Traffic violations are a common sight on the one-way streets.
According to traffic police, more than 315 people died in road accidents caused by traffic violations in the last three years. This include not wearing a helmet, overspeeding, and one-way violations. Therefore, it is especially concerning that an average of more than 105 deaths occur every year due to traffic rule violations.
According to traffic police, 900 cases of traffic violations were registered in 2023, and a fine of Rs 3.9 lakh was collected. In 2024, about 2,500 traffic violation cases were registered, and a fine of Rs 10.9 lakh was collected. In the first two months of this year alone, more than 300 cases of one-way traffic rule violations have been registered, and a fine of Rs 1.1 lakh has been collected.
