Torrential rains cause havoc, power outages, uprooted trees
Mysuru
On Tuesday night, Mysuru was hit by a powerful storm around 9:30 PM, as heavy rain and strong winds pounded the city. The downpour lasted over an hour, causing significant damage, power outages, and uprooting numerous trees across various areas.
The unexpected weather led to a standstill in many parts of the city. Several trees were torn from their roots, and large branches fell onto power lines, snapping cables and plunging neighborhoods into darkness. The blackout left many residents without electricity throughout the night, creating major inconveniences.
Kukkarahalli, a popular spot for jogging and walking near the University of Mysore, was among the worst-hit areas. Around 20 trees were uprooted, raising concerns among environmentalists and locals. Environmental activists quickly visited the site, urging university officials to consider translocating the trees that could be saved, rather than cutting them down. According to reports, the university’s vice-chancellor has agreed in principle to explore the possibility of relocating the trees.
Efforts to restore power began soon after the storm passed. A representative from the Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) stated that electricity was restored to many areas in the early hours, thanks to the hard work of ground staff who cleared fallen branches and debris overnight. "Our teams worked tirelessly to clear the debris and restore power. Other areas will be prioritized for restoration," the official said.
However, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) response was disappointing. No officials were available for comment, and attempts to reach the corporation commissioner went unanswered. This lack of communication has led to frustration among residents, who expected more prompt assistance during such an emergency.
As Mysuru begins to recover, the Meteorological Department has issued warnings of more rain in the coming days. Residents are urged to remain cautious and report any hazards to authorities.
