Toll charges increase on National Highway 66
Karwar
Starting today, motorists on National Highway 66, particularly at Belekeri toll plaza in Ankola taluk, will face increased toll charges. Vehicles without FASTag will have to pay double the toll amount.
The annual toll revision has resulted in a slight increase this time. Light vehicles will see a ₹5 hike, while toll charges for 2-axle buses and trucks will rise by ₹10 to ₹15. Heavy vehicles will experience an increase of ₹20 to ₹25.
Three toll plazas—Belekeri in Ankola, Holegadde in Kumta, and Shiruru in Udupi district—will implement these new rates from April 1, as announced by IRB Infrastructure Company, responsible for highway construction and maintenance.
For local commercial vehicles within a 20-km radius of toll plazas, the monthly pass fee will go up from ₹340 to ₹350. Vehicles making return trips within 24 hours will receive a 25% discount, while those crossing the toll plaza 50 times in a month will get up to a 33% reduction. Additionally, registered commercial vehicles operating within the district will enjoy a 50% discount.
Despite the increased charges, public frustration remains high due to incomplete highway construction on the 189-km stretch. Delays in areas like Karwar, Bhatkal, and Kumta have drawn criticism, as commuters demand fair pricing along with improved infrastructure. Many urge authorities to prioritize completing the project before implementing further toll hikes.
