Tolankere Lake Reels Under Stench from Sewage-Mixed Water

The foul odour emanating from Tolankere Lake has become a daily nuisance for visitors, morning walkers, and commuters. Despite being developed under the Smart City project at a cost of ₹35 crore, the lake is now reeling under pollution due to sewage contamination.
Residents and visitors have raised concerns over the stench, which has persisted despite the recent completion of development work. “The lake was developed nicely, but the authorities have failed to maintain it. The HDMC must act swiftly to clean it,” said Prakash Matti, a regular visitor.
Veeresh Patil, a resident of nearby Kumar Park, noted that officials have yet to find a lasting solution to prevent sewage water from entering the lake. Initially, the lake was filled with sewage during its development phase.
HDMC Executive Engineer Vittal Tubake stated that the entry of sewage into the lake was blocked around three to four months ago. “Only treated water is now released into the lake through the STP. However, the existing water has low oxygen levels, which causes the foul smell,” he explained.
He added that efforts are ongoing to find a permanent solution, including improving oxygen levels in the water to reduce the odour. The lake and its adjacent park are currently managed by a private agency using revenue generated from entry fees and park activities.
Until the old water is treated or replaced, visitors are likely to continue experiencing the unpleasant stench, despite the lake's recent makeover.
