Tanzania procures black gram seeds from UAS Dharwad for cultivation
DHARWAD
In a noteworthy achievement, the University of Agricultural Sciences Dharwad (UASD) has exported 24 tonnes of black gram seeds to Tanzania, with an additional order of 50 tonnes placed for the following year. Dr. T.R. Shashidhar, Special Officer, Seeds Unit, UASD, shared that the university's robust seed system has drawn attention from agricultural scientists across countries like Malawi and Nepal.
He noted that due to favorable pre-monsoon rains, seed sales commenced earlier than in previous years. UASD has not only exported seeds to various districts but also to seed corporations in Maharashtra, Odisha, Goa, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and other states. The university supplies breeder and foundation seeds to government agencies for further seed multiplication.
This year, sales of green gram and black gram saw a significant rise. Last year’s green gram production was low at just 65 quintals. Anticipating demand, UASD stocked 855 quintals this year and has already sold 800 quintals. Additionally, they sold 550 quintals of black gram and 1,600 quintals of soybean, including the popular DSB 21 and DSB 34 varieties. The varsity also sold 35 quintals of onion seeds.
Regarding onion seeds, Dr. Shashidhar explained that they are highly sensitive and cannot be stored for long periods or consumed like pulses. UASD provides certified seeds to companies as per the Department of Agriculture and Cooperation’s recommendations, and surplus seeds are distributed only after DAC’s requirements are met.
