Sugar Factory project nearing final stage amid opposition
KOPPAL: The proposed sugar factory by UKEM Agri Infra Limited near Muddaballi has reached its final stage of approvals, triggering a fresh wave of protests from local villagers. Residents of Muddaballi, New Gondaballi, and Old Gondaballi have strongly opposed the project, citing environmental and health concerns.
While the company has secured all necessary government permissions, it is now awaiting a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Gondaba Gram Panchayat. The Panchayat has issued a public notice, inviting objections from the public—an opportunity the villagers have swiftly used to voice their discontent.
Just months ago, thousands had gathered under the leadership of Sri Gavisiddeshwara Swamiji in a major protest against the Baldota factory, demanding that no new factories be allowed in Koppal taluk. Protesters claim existing factories have already caused serious health and environmental problems in the region.
The proposed sugar factory in Muddaballi is one of the projects they strongly oppose. Farmers recently staged a sudden protest, filed objections with the Panchayat, and announced plans to challenge the factory’s construction in court.
At an earlier hearing by the Environmental Pollution Control Board, hundreds of farmers submitted written objections, clearly stating their opposition to the factory. They urged the government to create a farmer-friendly atmosphere and prioritize agriculture over industrialization in rural areas.
Locals demand the government protect their health, land, and livelihoods by stopping the project and promoting sustainable farming instead of factory expansion in the region.
