Forest, Environment, and Ecology Minister Eshwar B Khandre expressed concern over the continued fatalities resulting from human-elephant conflicts, despite the government’s efforts to address the issue. He visited the family of Shanmukha, a recent victim of an elephant attack in Baikere village near Sakaleshpur, to offer his condolences.

During his visit, Khandre directed officials to set up a dedicated Elephant Task Force Unit in Bikkodu to ensure the timely sharing of information regarding elephant movements with local communities. He noted that this was his sixth visit to the district since assuming the role of Forest Minister, and that he had previously visited families of other victims to offer support.

Khandre emphasized that while elephants cannot differentiate between plantations and forests, they follow ancestral migratory routes, which often leads them into human settlements. He also highlighted the increase in compensation for families affected by wildlife attacks, which has been raised from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh in the state budget. Shanmukha’s family has received this compensation, although they are requesting a government job, a matter Khandre promised to discuss with the Chief Minister.

MP Shreyas Patel, MLA Cement Manju, and other officials accompanied the minister during the visit.
