Members of the Women’s Association of Somanathnagar met Chief Officer M Basavaraju at the Town Panchayat Office in Bogadi, demanding urgent attention to the lack of basic amenities in their locality.
The association submitted a memorandum highlighting the persistent civic issues and the hardships faced by the residents of Somanathnagar. After receiving the petition, Basavaraju assured them that the problems would be addressed in a phased manner.
Somanathnagar, located in the third phase of Dattagalli in city, was developed by the Government Employees’ Housing Co-operative Society. Despite this, residents say there is no authority responding to their grievances. Although they were earlier paying taxes to the Moodahalli Panchayat, not a single civic amenity was provided. Now, after the area’s inclusion in the Bogadi Town Panchayat, residents feel abandoned, left hanging between two banks. Instead of improving, the situation seems to be deteriorating.
One of the most pressing issues is the poor water supply. The underground water is highly saline, leading to corrosion in the main pipelines. As a result, residents have had no proper water supply for the past two months. Despite paying taxes and fees to the Bogadi Town Panchayat, households are forced to rely on private tankers, spending an additional Rs 2,000–Rs 3,000 every month on water.
A key demand is the uninterrupted supply of Kabini water to Somanathnagar. Although civil works have been completed, the water is still not reaching the locality effectively.
Further compounding the problems are severely damaged roads, non-functional or missing streetlights, irregular garbage collection, and overgrown weeds in vacant plots. These weeds have turned into breeding grounds for snakes, scorpions, and other poisonous creatures. The absence of streetlights on some streets poses serious risks, especially for the elderly, women, and children, who fear venturing out after dark.
The residents have appealed to the Town Panchayat to act swiftly and ensure that their long-pending civic issues are resolved without further delay.
