Sanitary Pads Meant for Schoolgirls Burnt, Public Anger Mounts in Kalaburagi

KALABURAGI – Sanitary pads intended for free distribution to adolescent girls under Karnataka’s Shuchi Scheme were found burnt at the Farhatabad Primary Health Centre on Kalaburagi’s outskirts, sparking widespread outrage.

The pads, worth several lakhs, were discovered during demolition work at the health centre. Thousands of unused packets, meant for high school and college girls, were reportedly stored in a godown but never distributed. Instead, health department officials allegedly set them ablaze, igniting public fury.

Local residents and community leaders condemned the destruction and demanded accountability. They questioned why such an essential health resource was hoarded and destroyed instead of being given to those in need.

Videos of burning sanitary pads have gone viral on social media, intensifying demands for justice and transparency.

In response, Dr. Sharanabasappa Kyatnal, District Health and Family Welfare Officer, issued notices to the RCH district official, the taluk health officer, and the medical officer of the Farhatabad centre. He has ordered a detailed investigation with a report due within 24 hours.

“A thorough inquiry into the burning of sanitary pads at Farhatabad PHC is underway. We expect a clear explanation within 24 hours,” Dr. Kyatnal stated, promising strict action against those found responsible.
